At first glance, my guess is that this movie was shot digitally on something like the HDC-F950, whose CCD pickup has similar noise characteristics as what’s displayed here. I based that guess on other movies shot with that camera.
I checked out IMDb and turns out they used a VariCam, which explains the look.
I only look at the odd capture in full size when I grab them (the program is tiny), and since the director so famously shot with gorgeous 35mm film in the past, I assumed… erm, there really is no excuse.

“Me: There’s something going on with the grain”
I am senile — officially. Anyone figured out what my big blunder was?

Hate to link to BD.com as they’ve not been the friendliest bunch, but here’s his GREEN PAPAYA, which Mr. Mackenzie assures me is not tinkered with: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Scent-of-Green-Papaya-Blu-ray/20836/#Screenshots
Are there any other films I’d know the VariCam from? Looks like it’s not quite up there with the Genesis…
